Valpo Places Seventh at DePauw Invitational

Meet Results

Led by a victory from Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) in the hammer throw, the Valparaiso men’s track and field team placed seventh Saturday at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.

The Crusaders tallied 49 points on the meet for their seventh-place finish.  Indiana Wesleyan earned the team title, accumulating 159 points.

Bartholomew surpassed the previous meet record in the hammer throw, registering a mark of 183’7”.  The senior also placed second in the discus throw with a distance of 164’4”.  Christopher Stohs (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) also recorded top-ten placements in both events, finishing sixth in the discus (133’7”) and tenth in the hammer (134’2”).

Valpo’s best finish on the track came from Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]), who ran to a runner-up finish in the 1,500m run, crossing the line in 3:59.46, besting the previous meet record.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) ran to a ninth-place finish in the same event with a time of 4:07.30.  Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) crossed the line fifth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.81, while Martenzie Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) completed the 400m hurdles in 57.24, good for a sixth-place showing and matching the fifth-fastest time in school history in the event.

On the infield, freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) registered two top-ten finishes, placing third in the triple jump (42’6”) and sixth in the long jump (20’6 ½”).  He was joined by a teammate in the top-ten in each event, as Heun leapt 19’8 ¼” for an eighth-place finish in the long jump, while Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) tallied a mark of 39’10 ¾” in the triple jump, good for sixth place.

Valparaiso returns to the track at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.  The two-day meet kicks off Friday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
