DePauw Invitational Results

Senior Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) owned Valpo’s school record in the weight throw entering the weekend, and proceeded to surpass it at both meets the Crusaders competed in this weekend.  Valpo sent Bartholomew and two others to the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., while the rest of the squad competed at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.

Bartholomew kicked off his weekend at the Meyo Invitational, where the weight throw was contested on Friday evening.  The only thrower of the 18 in the event not from a major-conference school, the senior posted a mark of 61’0 ¾”, good for sixth place and breaking his own record by four inches.  He then traveled with the rest of the team Saturday to the DePauw Invitational and took top honors in the weight throw there by nearly a foot, recording a distance of 61’0”.

Also at the Meyo Invitational, juniors Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) and Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) broke into Valpo’s all-time top-five in the 3,000m run.  Turchyn placed 30th in the elite 56-runner field, crossing the line in 8:33.98, third-best all-time at Valpo.  Honig followed in 32nd position, completing the race in 8:34.96, the fourth-best time in the event in program history.

Bartholomew’s win at the DePauw Invitational propelled the Crusaders to an eighth-place finish, as the team totaled 40 points on the meet.  Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) came home as the runner-up in the 800m run, running the race in 1:58.77, fifth-best in school history.  Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) also recorded a second-place finish with his toss of 45’9 ¼” in the shot put.

Also posting a top-five finish on the infield was freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley).  Mickens took fourth place in the triple jump with a leap of 43’7 ¾”, the fifth-best distance in the event all-time at Valpo.  On the track, Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) captured fifth place in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.12 seconds.

Valparaiso returns to the track next weekend at the Chicagoland Championships in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, February 16.  First event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
