The Valparaiso track and field teams, in partnership with Reachout Ministries, will be holding a lift-a-thon fundraiser this Friday, Dec. 10, with all funds raised going to provide Christmas to families in Guatemala who otherwise would not be able to celebrate.

Reachout Ministries is a non-profit faith based organization that provides educational support and a Christian witness to poor children and their families in Chiquimula, Guatemala.  Working with a local church, Iglesia Dios De Pactos (God of Covenants Church), Reachout Ministries is providing the support for these children to attend school.  In addition to the material support, they receive tutoring to help them succeed academically.  They also receive classes in basic English to prepare them for advancement to higher education.  At the same time, the children receive emotional and spiritual support from the local staff of Reachout Ministries.

The Crusaders’ fundraiser will provide over 30 families with a fully decorated Christmas tree, as well as presents for each family.  Donations for the lift-a-thon can be made either as a flat rate amount or an amount per pound lifted.  Donations will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 17, and anybody who is interested in donating can contact head coach Ryan Moore at 219-464-6118 or Ryan.Moore@valpo.edu.

“I am thrilled that our team will be playing a small part in providing a Christmas celebration for those who are less fortunate and I am blessed to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people of Chiquimula,” said Moore.  “During this Christmas season, it is important to recognize how fortunate we are in the United States and to give back to those in need.”
