Field Events Lead Valpo at Miami Invitational

Valparaiso's field events scored the majority of the Crusaders' points on Friday and Saturday as the Brown and Gold finished in ninth place at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.

The Crusaders tallied 14 points in the event while Cincinnati won the team title with 201.5 points.

Eric Smith (Portage, Ind./Portage H.S.) and Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township H.S.) led Valpo to a fourth and fifth place finish respectively in the discus. Both turned in tosses of 146'9". The duo were also Valpo's top two hammer throwers. The only event held on Friday, Smith finished eights with a mark of 150'5" while his teammate was just 4'5" behind him. Smith was also the top shot putter, finishing 13th with a heave of 43'9 ¾".

Joshua Lee (Yellow Jacket, Colo./Montezuma-Cortez H.S.) also scored for the Brown and Gold in the long jump. The senior finished eighth with a leap of 21'2". He also finished 15th in the 100m dash with a time of 11.67 seconcds. Mark Lincoln (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham H.S.) placed tenth in the javelin with toss of 150'3" while Josh Stamper led Valpo in the pole vault clearing 13'7 ¼" to place 13th.

Jeremy Paul (Lodi, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) was the only Valpo athlete to score on the track. He finished in eighth place in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:05.88. Teammate Adriano Schultz (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights H.S.) was one place behind Paul with a time of 10:10.25.

Jeff Moscinski (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life H.S.) led the way for Valpo in the 400m dash, placing 14th with a time of 51.82 seconds while Adam Piaskowy (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee H.S.) was 19th in the 5,000m crossing the line in 15:52.20. Derek Augustynowicz (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew H.S.) wsa 15th in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:01.03.

Valparaiso will head to the Pacesetter Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. Friday's events begin at 3:30 p.m.
