Crusaders Compete on Second Day of Gina Relays

Three members of the Valparaiso men's track and field team broke into the Crusaders' all-time charts Friday as Valpo took part in the second day of action at the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich.

Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) moved into third all-time in Crusader history in the 3,000m steeplechase Friday. Honig crossed the line with a time of 9:24.36, good for 18th place out of the 84 competitors and the top time to date this season in the Mid-Con.

Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) came home in 16th place among 39 runners in the 400m hurdles. Heun finished the race in 57.24, good for fifth-best all-time at Valpo.

Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) moved into fifth in Crusader history in the 10,000m run. Schultz placed 57th out of 100 runners in the long-distance event, crossing the line in 32:11.96, the second-best time in the Mid-Con in the event this year.

On the infield, Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) led the Crusaders with a sixth-place finish out of 67 competitors in the hammer throw, registering a toss of 182'3". Eric Smith (Portage, Ind./Portage) paced Valpo in the shot put, finishing 17th with a mark of 45'0 ½".

Valparaiso returns to the track for the final day of competition Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT.
