The Valparaiso men’s track and field team beat Loyola (73-49) and Chicago State (81-46), but lost to Milwaukee (81-54) and UIC (70-63) at the Panther Tune-Up Friday evening in Milwaukee, Wis., scored as dual meets.  Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) once again bested his own school record in the weight throw to lead the Crusader squad.

This week, Bartholomew registered a toss of 63’4” in the weight throw, breaking the record mark he posted last week by more than 19 inches.  The senior finished better than eight feet ahead of the runner-up, and was less than eight inches shy of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

On the track, Valpo registered four top-five finishes on the evening.  Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) ran the fifth-fastest time in school history in the 800m run, crossing the line in 1:57.61 for a second-place finish.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) took runner-up honors in the mile run with a time of 4:21.30.  Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) placed third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.83 seconds, fifth-fastest all-time at Valpo, while Martenzie Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) finished right behind Heun in fourth place in 9.07 seconds.

On the infield, Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) placed second in the shot put with a toss of 44’3 ½”, while Christopher Stohs (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) finished third in the same event with a mark of 42’6”.  Philip Lohrmann (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground [Clark C.C.]) cleared 13’7 ¼” in the pole vault for fifth place, while freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) placed fifth in both the long jump (21’2”) and triple jump (43’5 ¼”).

Valparaiso returns to the track for the two-day Horizon League Indoor Championships beginning Saturday, March 1 at 8 a.m. in Kent, Ohio.
