Senior Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) captured the victory in the weight throw Saturday at the Redbird Open in Normal, Ill., leading Valparaiso’s men’s squad in the season’s first meet.
Bartholomew earned individual top honors in the weight throw with a toss of 57’3 ½”. His mark was over a foot and a half longer than the runner-up.
Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) moved into Valpo’s all-time top-five in the 60m hurdles. The junior qualified for the event final with a prelim time of 8.91 seconds, and lowered his time to 8.84 seconds in the final, fifth-fastest all-time at Valpo.
Freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) paced Valpo in two jumps Saturday. Mickens placed sixth in the triple jump (41’11 ½”) and tenth in the long jump (19’4 ¾”). Also on the infield, Philip Lohrmann (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground [Clark C.C.]) cleared 13’5 ¼” in the pole vault, good for sixth place, while Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 46’9 ½”.
Valparaiso will not return to the track for six weeks. The Crusaders will next compete on Saturday, January 19 at the Phoenix Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
