Senior Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) won two events Saturday to lead the Valparaiso men’s track and field team as it placed third at the Ted Haydon Invitational in Chicago, Ill.

“This was a good meet for us,” said Crusader head coach Ryan Moore.  “I think we really performed well in less-than-ideal weather conditions, and we’re ahead of where we want to be at this point in the season.”

Bartholomew continued his tremendous senior year with wins in the discus throw (166’0”) and hammer throw (182’4”).  Joining him with fifth-place finishes in each event was Chris Stohs (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission North), who posted marks of 134’4” in the hammer and 133’0” in the discus.

Elsewhere on the infield, Caleb Meyer (Seward, Neb./Seward) finished in a tie for second in the pole vault, clearing 11’11 ¾”.  Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) placed second in the long jump (20’8 ½”), while Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) finished fourth (20’3 ¾”).  Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) led the Crusaders in the triple jump with a leap of 40’11 ¾”, good for third place.

Heun was one of two Crusaders on the track to earn event victories, taking home top honors with a time of 16.01 in the 110m hurdles.  Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) captured the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:41.61, while Joel Mathwig (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek) finished fifth in the same event.

Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) posted two fourth-place finishes on the day in the 800m run (2:04.27) and the 1,500m run (4:13.10), while Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:03.62.  Ryan Ruppel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) tallied a fifth-place finish in the 200m dash (23.30), and Martenzie Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) came home third in the 400m hurdles (58.54).

The Crusaders tallied 103 points on the meet for their third-place finish.  Carthage College registered 143 points to earn the team title.

Valparaiso returns to the track next Saturday, April 5, at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.  The first event is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CDT.
