Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) won the hammer throw to lead the Valparaiso men’s track and field team Saturday afternoon as it competed at the Butler Twilight Meet in Indianapolis, Ind.

Bartholomew dominated the field of 26 athletes in the hammer throw, winning the event with a toss of 186’8”, over 11 feet farther than the runner-up’s toss.  The senior also posted a second-place finish in the discus throw, registering a mark of 164’11”.

Also on the infield, Brett Maynard (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) came in third place in the javelin throw with a season-best mark of 161’11”.  Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) registered ninth-place finishes in both the discus throw (137’1”) and shot put (44’9 ½”).  Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) placed fourth in the triple jump, leaping 43’7”, while Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) finished right behind Mickens with a season-best jump of 42’0”.

On the track, Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) recorded the Crusaders’ best placement, running to a sixth-place finish in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:03.22.  Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) crossed the line in the 110m hurdles in 15.34 seconds, good for eighth place, while Martenzie Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) finished the 400m hurdles in 59.02 seconds to place ninth.

Valpo’s relay squad of Ryan Ruppel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), Heun, Mickens and Johnson also ran to a pair of fourth-place finishes on the day.  The quartet completed the 4x100m relay in 45.37 seconds to finish fourth and replicated its finish in the 4x400m relay, crossing the line in 3:31.79.

Valparaiso returns to the track at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, to be contested at Youngstown, Ohio this Thursday and Friday, May 8-9.
