Frey, Smutz, Watson set Second-Best All-Time Marks
Jacob Smutz set the second best discus throw in school history.

The Valparaiso men’s track and field team had a trio of athletes set the second-best all-time marks in their respective events on Saturday at the Illini Twilight.

Jacob Frey (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) took second in the hammer throw with his toss of 58.18m/190-10, bettering his second best mark in school history by over three feet.

Jacob Smutz (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) became the holder of the second farthest discus throw in school history with his heave of 48.17m/158-0 on his third attempt as he finished in fifth.

Alexander Watson (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) set the second best mark in school history in the pole vault as he cleared 4.46m/14-7.5 and finished in 12th.

Jeremy Getz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) launched a massive throw of 59.78m/196-1 in the javelin to finish in fourth.

Trace Ostergren (LaPorte, Ind./Culver Academy) ran a season best 10:11.91 in the 3,000m steeplechase and finished in seventh.

Chris Sosnowski (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) and Isaiah Cook (Granger, Ind./Penn) finished fifth and eighth in the hammer throw with tosses of 53.32m/174-11 and 49.83m/163-6, respectively. They would both add top-ten finishes in the discus. Sosnowski finished seventh with his throw of 45.68m/149-10 while Cook finished three spots behind with his season best mark of 42.47m/139-4.

Jonathan Heagy (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Andrew Guzek (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) would both finish tenth in their respective events. In the high jump, Heagy cleared 1.84m/6-0.5 while Guzek threw 14.12m/46-4 in the discus.

Antwon Hatchett (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central), James Sampson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Adam Bruno (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) all ran season bests in their respective events. Hatchett ran a 57.45 in the 400m hurdles to take 15th, Sampson ran a wind-legal 11.22 in the 100m dash and Bruno crossed the finish in 15:42.42 in the 5,000m run.

Valpo finished in eighth place with 32 points.

The Crusaders are set to host their first ever home meet next Saturday at Warren G. Hoger Track in Brown Field, with throwing events taking place at Eastgate Field.
