Valpo Athletics Mourns the Passing of Warren G. Hoger

The Valparaiso University Department of Athletics is saddened by the loss of Warren G. Hoger ‘53, who passed away on June 30 at the age of 94.

Hoger was a member of the Valpo track & field team as an undergraduate and enjoyed a long, distinguished career as the track & field coach at Walther Lutheran High School in Chicago. In 1983, Hoger was inducted into the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Valpo’s home outdoor track surrounding Brown Field is known as Warren G. Hoger Track in his honor, through the support and vision of his former student-athlete Jay Christopher. The track was dedicated during the 2014 Homecoming football game and Hoger was among the dignitaries who addressed fans during the dedication ceremony.

Hoger, who earned a degree in physical education and a minor in history during his time at Valpo, was a proud member of the Kappa Iota Pi fraternity. His teaching and coaching career spanned over 53 years – 40 at Walther Lutheran, two at Concordia Chicago and 11 at Triton College. Hoger received the Valparaiso University Alumni Achievement Award in 2003.

Visitation will be on Monday, July 8 from 3-8 p.m. at Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Rd, Lombard. In State Tuesday 10am until time of service at 11am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1025 Lake St, Melrose Park, IL 60160. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
