Valparaiso captured top honors in ten events Saturday at the Puma Invitational in Rensselaer, Ind., led by three event victories by Emilie Marsicek
Marsicek improved upon her own school record in the shot put, registering a toss of 44'6 ¼" to break her previous mark by six-and-a-half inches. The distance is the second-best mark in the Mid-Con this year, and set a new meet record. The redshirt junior also set a new meet record in the hammer throw with an effort of 156'4", second-best in Crusader history. Marsicek also moved into second on Valpo's all-time chart in the javelin throw with a mark of 124'2".
Marsicek was not the only Crusader to enjoy success in the throws, as Ini Umana
(Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) won the discus throw with a toss of 133'2". Umana's distance is the third-best in the event in the conference this year, and is second-best in Valpo history.
Freshman Lakisha Lane
(Topeka, Kan./Highland Park) moved into third all-time at Valpo in the 100m hurdles, winning the race in 15.19. Lane also came home first in the 400m hurdles.
The Crusader 4x100m relay squad posted the second-fastest time in program history in the event, crossing the line in 49.13 to win the race. Also moving onto Valpo's all-time charts was Carissa Heinold
(Charleston, Ill./Charleston), who cleared 10' in the pole vault, tying the fourth-best height in Crusader history.
(Medford, Wis./Medford Area) joined Marsicek as a multiple event winner on the day, crossing the line first in the 100m and 200m dashes. Also taking top honors were Danielle Nunnelly
(Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) in the 800m run and Ashley Billstrom
(Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) in the 1,500m run.
Valparaiso returns to the track at the Hillsdale Gina Relays on the campus of Hillsdale College Thursday through Saturday, April 26 through 28. The meet kicks off Thursday at 2:15 p.m. CDT.
