Monday, November 23, 2009Valparaiso senior outside hitter Angie Porché (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) has been named an ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-American as chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), released today. Porché was eligible for the honor after earning Academic All-District V First Team recognition earlier this month.
Porché, a two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American and All-Midwest Region selection, earned her fourth consecutive All-League honor this season and has registered a team-high 437 kills this season, with her 3.80 kills/set ranking second among Horizon League players. She also has stepped up on the back line, tallying 306 total digs this year, second-most among all Crusaders.
For her career, Porché is the Crusaders’ all-time leader in both kills (2,036) and attacks (5,129). She also moved into Valpo’s all-time top-tens in both service aces (126, t-7th) and hitting percentage (.243, 9th) this season and became just the sixth play in Crusader volleyball history to pick up 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Porché also holds four of the top ten single-season efforts in Valpo history in both kills and attacks.
In the classroom, Porché maintains a 3.76 cumulative grade point average as a psychology major. Also an Academic All-District honoree in 2008, Porché was named to the Horizon League Academic All-League squad last season. The senior has been a member of the league’s Academic Honor Roll all four semesters the Crusaders have been in the league, and has earned Dean’s List recognition and Presidential academic honors during her time at Valpo.
Porché becomes just the second Crusader volleyball player in program history to earn Academic All-American accolades. Laura Kulans was named a Third Team Academic All-America selection in 1996 as well.
To be eligible for Academic All-District and Academic All-America, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be either a starter or key reserve. District V consists of schools in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba.
