Valparaiso saw its three-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders suffered a 6-1 setback to Green Bay in their Horizon League opener at the Northwest Athletic Club in Michigan City, Ind.
Jose Gaspar (Sao Paulo, Brazil/CEAD H.S.) posted Valpo’s lone victory at number one singles, posting a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Erik Finkenbrink. For Gaspar, it was his fifth straight win.
“It was good to see Guto continue to play well,” head coach Jim Daugherty said. “We just need to work as a team on being more consistent in our overall play.”
The Phoenix won the other five singles contests, four in straight sets. Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) forced a third set at number five before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against Fabian Gogolin.
At second singles, Paul Swanson downed Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) 6-4, 7-5 while Craig Cox topped Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) 6-1, 6-1 at the third spot. Christoph Hopfe posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) at fifth singles while Henning Jess defeated Siddarth Mehta (South Bend, Ind./Clay H.S.) 7-5, 6-0 at the sixth spot.
Green Bay (8-4, 2-0 Horizon) opened the match winning all three doubles contests. Gogolin and Hopfe defeated Gaspar and Honert at number one 8-7 (5). Finkenbrink and Josh Oothoudt added an 8-4 victory at the second spot while Swanson and Cox downed DeHerrera and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) 8-1 at number three doubles.
Valparaiso (5-7, 0-1) will return to the courts next Saturday to host Detroit at the Northwest Athletic Club. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
