Valparaiso’s men’s tennis team returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Indiana Wesleyan 7-0 outdoors at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” head coach Jim Daugherty said. “After playing a late match last night, they rebounded and played well today.”
The Crusaders opened the match winning all three doubles contests to take the opening point. Jose Gaspar (Sao Paulo, Brazil/CEAD H.S.) and Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) cruised to an 8-0 win over Daniel Stoddard and Micah May at the top of the lineup while Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) and Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) downed Matt Pedersen and Adam Wroughton at the second spot. Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) added an 8-2 triumph over Brooks Ayers and Alex Hornett at third doubles.
Valpo won all six singles matches in straight sets against Indiana Wesleyan (7-9). Gaspar topped Pedersen 6-4, 6-0 at number one while Baum was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over May at the second spot. DeHerrera breezed past Wroughton 6-0, 6-0 at third singles while Whitmer posted a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Ayers at number four singles. Stump downed Stoddard 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth spot while Michael Woodson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft H.S.) defeated Hornett 6-2, 6-0 at the bottom of the order.
Valparaiso (7-11) will return to action on Tuesday afternoon in Chicago as the Crusaders face Chicago State. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
