Despite rainy conditions and power outages, students still showed their support for Crusader athletics over several events this past Communiversity weekend.
During four volleyball matches, students dodged classes and raindrops to fills the stands. Fans had the opportunity to watch the volleyball team go 3-1 while hosting the Marriott Volley Brawl. Friday night's game felt a heavy presence of the Crusader football team as they took a break from preparation to cheer on their fellow athletes in the ValparaiZone. Meanwhile, the Valpo basketball teams also showed support for Crusader volleyball throughout the weekend, including an appearance from men's head basketball coach Bryce Drew.
The football team also received a warm reception by Crusader fans as they began their season at Brown Field under the lights. Students crammed in to the student section and tailgate area to watch a very competitive and impressive showing from the Crusaders. After jumping out to an early lead and maintaining striking distance throughout the whole game, the ValparaiZone was treated to an extremely entertaining game as the football team displayed their new and improved quick tempo offense which accumulated 463 yards of total offense. Despite falling a bit short in a 49-35 loss, the student section weathered the rain to enjoy the game and intense atmosphere.
Students also began reaping the rewards of the Victory Bell Rewards Program, as many fans reached Level 1 and received a free student section T-shirt.
The next Valpo home game will be on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 PM as the Crusader volleyball team will be back in action against the UIC Flames.
