Valparaiso’s women’s golf team set two more school records on Tuesday, firing an 18-hole round of 309 as a team to finish at 619 at Highland Golf and Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind. The Crusaders improved one spot in the team standings over the final round to finish sixth overall.
The Crusaders round of 309 broke the team’s single round mark of 310 set on Monday in the tournament’s opening round. The tournament total of 619 was 17 strokes better than the previous best set at the Dayton Invitational last fall.
“I’m really proud of our girls,” head coach Mat Blair said after the round. “It was a great team effort today and everyone played well.”
Butler won the team title at 591 (295-296), four strokes ahead of runner-up IUPUI. The Crusaders finished one shot behind Western Illinois for a spot in the top five.
“It was a really good field this week,” Blair added. “We saw some quality teams which gave us great competition both days. Our short game has been so much better of late and that is a big reason why we are having better results all around.”
Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd H.S.) led the way for Valpo with a final round 75 on Tuesday, improving by 14 shots from round one. Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale H.S.) added a 76 to finish at 157 for the tournament.
A.J. Selig (Hortonville, Wis./Appleton West H.S.) and Brianna Davy (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) both posted 79s as Valpo’s four counting scores were all in the 70s. Selig finished tied for 20th overall at 155 while Davy finished at 158.
Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) carded a final round 80 to finish at 154, tying for 17th place and marking the Crusaders’ highest team finish. Individually Jessica O’Brien (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) added an 82 on Tuesday.
Valparaiso will conclude the fall season Oct. 17-18 in Kettering, Ohio for the Dayton Invitational.
