The ValparaiZone was treated to an impressive performance by the Crusader men's basketball team on Thursday night. After showing great strides from the first exhibition, the Crusaders dominated play throughout most of the game, taking down the preseason number two Division III Augustana Vikings 74-65. The game was not nearly as close as the score indicates, as Augustana scored the last 15 points of the game to avoid getting blown out.
Richie Edwards impressed fans with his athletic, strong inside game mixed with perimeter shooting. Edwards scored 14 points in only 23 minutes of action. Ryan Broekhoff continued his stellar play scoring 13 including a breakaway highlight-worthy dunk. Matt Kenney looked much improved and much more aggressive, providing the Crusaders with an explosive offensive threat from the tip-off to the final whistle. Will Bogan and Jay Harris chipped in giving a three point threat to the Valpo offense, while Erik Buggs once again showed off his phenomenal defensive prowess.
Valpo fans came early to mingle with ESPN writer and analyst Andy Katz, who filmed an upcoming SportsCenter feature about the Drew family. Members of the ValparaiZone participated in a pregame meal, which will be served at all home games for the rest of the year.
The Valpo men's basketball team will travel to Tucson to take on the number 16 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Monday. The union café will host a viewing party showing the Crusaders regular-season opener against Arizona on ESPNU. The café will also be serving discounted food for those attending the viewing party.
