Saturday's crucial Crusader road game against Milwaukee came down to the very last second and members of the ValparaiZone were there to witness Valpo's thrilling come-from-behind victory.
A bus filled with the ValparaiZone made the short trek to Wisconsin to show support for the Crusader men's basketball team. Despite upper deck seats, the cheering Crusader fans could be heard all around the stadium and even on the Comcast Sports Net and Horizon League Network telecasts.
In a hard-fought battle for the right for second place in the Horizon League standings, Valpo managed to come away victorious 55-52 mainly due to the staunch Crusader defense which allowed only 11 points in the final 17:30 of the game. Ryan Broekhoff led the Crusaders with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Kevin Van Wijk continued his phenomenal play of late, posting 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Freshman Joey Basil commented on the trip stating, "It was a great time. The atmosphere was electric down to the very last second. I really liked having the dueling student sections."
Nate King echoed the same sentiments boasting, "Influencing the game with some Valparaizone noise from the stands is always fun, and it's even better in enemy territory. I would definitely travel with the section to another away game, and hopefully we will have the opportunity to do so again this season."
After their victory, the Crusaders even pointed at the student section that traveled to the game, acknowledging an appreciation for the support.
The ValparaiZone will be back in full effect on Thursday, February 2, as the Crusaders take on Detroit. Tipoff at 6:30.
