Wisconsin-Green Bay Defeats Valpo Indoors

Friday, October 03, 2003

Wisconsin-Green Bay defeated Valparaiso 5-2 on Friday afternoon at Matchpoint Tennis Club in a contest that was moved indoors due to the inclement weather in the Valparaiso area.

The Phoenix opened by winning the doubles point, taking both second and third doubles. Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highland H.S.) and Jeff Vrabel (Allen Park, Mich./St. Francis Cabrini H.S.) tallied the Crusaders lone victory, downing Ben Davis and Derek Gonwa 8-4 at the top spot.

Dunham-Freer posted a three-set victory at first singles to earn Valpo one point with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 decision over Davis. Joe Venegas (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North H.S.) tallied the Brown and Gold's other point with his 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Jaret Cascino at third singles.

Valpo will compete in an exhibition match on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. against the Crusader Alumni at Brown Courts as part of Homecoming at Valparaiso University. The Brown and Gold will then conclude their fall season October 23-28 at the Omni Regional Championships held in East Lansing, Mich.
