Paul's Hat Trick Leads Loyola Past Valpo

Sunday, August 29, 2004

Stephanie Paul scored three times, including twice during a 1:06 span as Loyola (Ill.) defeated Valparaiso 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at a soggy Eastgate Field.

Paul put the Ramblers on the board at the 22:26 mark taking a cross from Kathryn Heidenreich from the right corner to beat Crusader goalkeeper Erin Murray (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley H.S.). The duo connected again 1:06 later as Heldenrich found Paul at the left side of the box to make it 2-0 Loyola. Mary Dale put the visitors up by three in the first half heading home a Paul cross from the right side at 30:03 for her first goal of the year.

Loyola outshot the Brown and Gold 10-3 in the opening stanza, including a 7-1 advantage on net.

Allison Swanson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) put Valpo on the board at the 50:58 mark picking up a loose ball in front of the goal mouth following a Lindsay Holley (Waldorf, Md./Westlake H.S.) cross and scored for her first goal of the year. Holley's assist was her second of the year and tenth of her career, tying her for second in school history. She is one helper shy of Jennifer Grupe's (1998-2001) career mark of 11.

Loyola answered at the 65:55 mark as Paul completed her hat trick scoring unassisted after a one-on-one play in the box. Andrea Shamp added a final insurance tally with 1:17 remaining scoring from the right side about 20 yards out after taking a pass from Erika Lopez.

The Crusaders had more offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting Loyola 10-5 in the frame and forcing back-up goalkeeper Lauren Sommer to make six second half saves, but could not push more than the one goal past the Ramblers.

Murray finished the match making four saves in goal for the Crusaders. Emily Peick started in net for Loyola (2-0) and stopped one first half shot.

Valpo earned eight corner kicks compared with Loyola's one.

Valparaiso (0-2) will look for its first victory of the season when the Crusaders return to action next Friday evening. The Brown and Gold will take on Evansville in a 7 p.m. road match.
