Crusaders Complete Final Tune-up for Mid-Con Championships

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) set two school records and Jobeth Schmiesing (Mankato, Minn./West H.S.) added another as Valparaiso completed its final tune-up for the Mid-Continent Conference Championships on Saturday at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.

Wilson finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.81 seconds, bettering Karie Dahlgren's 1998 mark of 15.01 seconds. She also bettered her own school mark in the long jump, placing second with a leap of 18'2 ¼". The freshman also placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 34'11 ¼".

Schmiesing broke Amanda Lee's 2003 mark of 11:23.64 in the steeple chase with a time of 11:22.84, placing second in the event.

Elsewhere on the track, Rachael Button (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington H.S.), Heidi Nathan (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford H.S.), and Kelly Owens (Highland Heights, Ky./Highlands H.S.) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 10,000m for the Brown and Gold. Button led the way with a time of 39:56.89.

In the 5,000m run, Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) finished third with a time of 18:04.72 while Rachel Nelson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit H.S.) finished fifth in the 800m in 2:19.36.

In the sprints, Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) placed fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:02.06. Meyer also finished sixth in the pole vault after clearing 10'0".

Also on the infield, Jessica Cherrington (Roseburg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.) won the javelin with a mark of 130'1". Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.) was fourth in the event with a toss of 102'1" and earned a third place finish in the shot put with a heave of 40'0 ½". Rachel Liptak (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley H.S.) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 128'10".

The Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for May 12-14 in Kansas City, Mo.
