Crusaders Crush IUPUI 3-0 Saturday

Saturday, October 01, 2005

Valpo scored the first 12 points of game one and never looked back in a dominating 30-13, 30-26, 30-19 win over IUPUI Saturday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

The Crusaders hit a sizzling .480 in the first game, holding IUPUI to a
-.250 mark in their most lopsided single game win of the season. They did not let up from there either, finishing the match hitting .339 and holding the Jaguars to a -.009 hitting percentage.

Defending Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year Lauren Moulton (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) improved on her stellar start to the conference season, recording a match-high 15 kills, hitting .500, to go with four blocks. Moulton is averaging one block and 3.82 kills per game through the first four conference matches, hitting .376.

Jessie Fox (Granger, Ind./Penn) led a strong Crusader defense with a match-high six blocks, two solo, to go with 12 kills. Katie Bova (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) notched another double-double, her 11th of the year, with 14 digs and 42 assists.

The win for Valpo was their 24th consecutive Mid-Continent Conference win, fifth straight overall, and 16th win in a row at the Athletics-Recreation Center. It was also the 90th win of Head Coach Carin Avery's career. Avery now stands two shy of the all-time record, held by Cindy Harris.

IUPUI (9-7, 2-1) was led by Carol Newell with eight kills, as the Jaguars had only one player hit better than .111.

The Brown and Gold (14-3, 4-0) head to South Bend Wednesday night to take on Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's NCAA first round match, won 3-1 by the Fighting Irish. The two squads split two matches last year, with the Crusaders winning 3-2 in South Bend during the regular season. Wednesday's match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with live coverage available on 95.1 FM, WVUR, or online at www.valpo.edu/athletics.
