Valpo Marches Past DePaul at Chicagoland Classic

Saturday, August 26, 2006

Freshman Angie Porché (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton-Fractional South) had a match-high 12 kills and all 13 Crusaders saw the court as Valpo rolled past DePaul 30-21, 30-21, 30-25 Saturday afternoon in their second match at the Chicagoland Classic in Chicago, Ill.

In her Valpo debut Friday night against UIC, Porché had 14 kills in four games, and only she and senior Jessie Fox (Granger, Ind./Penn) have recorded double-digit kills in each of the first two matches of the season. Porché hit .250 for the match and also chipped in three service aces.

Fox, who led all players with 19 kills on Friday added 11 against the Blue Demons and recorded a match-high five blocks. The senior also picked up her first solo block of the season and 43rd of her career, moving her into a tie with Angie Nordquist for 10th all-time at Valpo.

Nicole Schulz (Kewaskum, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), who posted career highs in kills, attacks and digs on Friday, hit .417 in Saturday's match with seven kills on 12 attacks. Allison Sears (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) also followed up a career night on Friday with a solid effort, notching eight kills and a pair of blocks.

For the Crusaders, who rarely trailed during any game, 12 players saw time in at least two games, including freshmen Haley Wise (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka), who had three aces, and Kim Bukowski (Waukesha, Wis./West), who had 15 assists, in their Valpo debuts. The fourth Valpo newcomer, freshman Val Bollenbacher (Bremen, Ind./Bremen), totaled one kill Saturday after picking up three in limited action Friday night.

Morgan Ingersoll led DePaul (0-2) with 10 kills. The Blue Demons hit only .095 for the match, and just .015 in the first two games. The Crusaders, on the other hand, hit .235 and recorded six blocks to only four for DePaul.

The Brown and Gold (2-0) can win the Chicagoland Classic later Saturday when they match up with Loyola (Chicago) at 5:00 p.m. The Ramblers fell to host UIC 3-2 Saturday morning after sweeping DePaul on Friday.
