Sunday, February 25, 2007Laura Rolf (Rochester, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) shattered a Championship record on her way to victory in the 3,000m run, while Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan) broke the school record in the 60m dash as Valparaiso competed on day one of the Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ill.
The women's team registered 25 points in four event finals Sunday, good for third place among the five squads competing. Oral Roberts leads the team competition with 51 points.
Rolf, currently ranked among the top-20 in the nation in both the mile run and 3,000m run, broke the tape in the latter event in 9:38.06 Sunday. Rolf's time was over 17 seconds faster than the previous Mid-Con Championship record, set by former Crusader All-American Collette Liss in 1999. The three-time Mid-Con Athlete of the Week defeated her closest competitor, Oral Roberts' Diana Chelimo, by better than 16 seconds.
Body qualified for Monday's event final in the 60m dash by completing her qualifying run in 7.92, four-hundredths of a second faster than the previous Crusader record in the event, set by Laura Arloszynski in 2005. Body also qualified for the finals in the 200m dash with a time of 25.67, and led three Crusaders in the long jump with a leap of 16'2 ¼".
Freshman Lakisha Lane (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park) moved up two of Valpo's all-time charts with her efforts Sunday. Lane led all racers in the prelims of the 60m hurdles, completing the race in 9.04, second-best in Crusader history and just five-hundredths of a second behind teammate Melanie Wilson's (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) record. Wilson qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles as well, posting a time of 9.35 in the prelims to move on.
Lane did not qualify for the 200m dash finals, but her time of 26.54 was good for fourth-best all-time at Valpo. Randol Alexander (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) came up short of qualifying for the finals in the 400m dash, but led Valpo with a time of 1:03.74.
Three other Crusaders scored points for Valpo in individual event finals Sunday. Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) and Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) joined Rolf among the top eight finishers in the 3,000m run, coming home sixth and seventh with times of 10:11.58 and 10:19.58, respectively. Billstrom's time was the third-best effort in the event in Valpo history. Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau) finished fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 47'5", third-best in Crusader history.
Valpo's distance medley relay squad came home third Sunday. The squad of Jennifer Plaskota (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Windy Santa Cruz (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek), Lindsey Gilman (South Bend, Ind./Marian) and Alyssa Bradford (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) completed the race in 13:13.57.
