Five Event Victories Help Valpo to Third-Place Showing

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) won three events Saturday at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind., including a school-record effort in the 100m hurdles, while Ini Umana (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) added two wins of her own as the Valparaiso women’s track and field team finished in third place.
The Crusaders tallied 125 points for their third-place showing. Illinois Wesleyan earned top team honors with 151 points.
Wilson lowered the school record in the 100m hurdles by nearly two-tenths of a second, covering the course in 14.49 seconds, which also set a new meet record. She followed that effort by capturing the long jump with a mark of 17’10 ¾”, and closed her day with a victory in the triple jump, leaping 35’7 ¾”.
Umana enjoyed nearly as spectacular a day for the Crusaders Saturday. The sophomore took first place in the hammer throw with a distance of 139’4”, the fifth-best effort in the event in Valpo history. She proceeded to top the podium again in the discus throw, recording a toss of 125’7”. Umana also moved into the Crusaders’ all-time top five in the shot put with a mark of 37’11 ½”, good for a seventh-place finish.
Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan) turned in three runner-up finishes for the Crusaders on the day, taking second place in the 100m dash (12.60), long jump (17’2 ¾”) and triple jump (35’1 ¾”). Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau) also contributed heavily to Valpo’s team score, placing third in three separate events: shot put (40’0 ½”), hammer throw (131’8”) and discus throw (124’6”).
Also on the track, Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) ran to a pair of fourth-place finishes, covering the 100m dash in 12.75 seconds and the 200m dash in 26.49 seconds. Amy Anderson (Morton, Ill./Morton) added a fifth-place showing in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:10.73.
Valparaiso returns to the track at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The two-day meet kicks off Friday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
