Valparaiso University’s Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran North) and Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) both were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V First Team as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Both Korb and Zappia will now be eligible for Academic All-American consideration.

Korb, a junior outfielder, currently holds a 3.93 grade point average as a finance and marketing major.  On the season, she has hit .265 with 20 runs scored and has set a new Valpo single-season record with 29 stolen bases on just 30 attempts.  Korb ranks 15th in the nation with 0.64 stolen bases/game and paces the Horizon League in the category.  She also set Valpo’s career stolen bases record earlier this year and now has swiped 65 bases over her three seasons.  In the classroom, Korb has twice been honored as an NFCA Scholar-Athlete and has earned Academic All-Conference accolades twice, and was named to the Academic All-District V Second Team last year.

Zappia, a senior pitcher, currently holds a 3.79 GPA as a history major.  One of the most distinguished pitchers in school history, Zappia broke Crusader single-season records for victories (19) and strikeouts (169) and career marks for strikeouts (438) and appearances (137) this year as a senior.  She currently holds a 19-8 record with five saves and a 2.04 ERA on the season.  A two-time Horizon League Player of the Week this year, Zappia was named the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of March.  An Academic All-District V Second Team honoree last season, she is a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-Conference recipient.

To be eligible for Academic All-District, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.20, and be either a starter or key reserve. District V consists of schools in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, and Manitoba.
