Kyle Stump earned victories in both singles and doubles. Thursday, April 17, 2008 Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) earned his ninth singles victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon in Chicago, Ill., but Valparaiso came up on the short end of a 6-1 decision to UIC. UIC (12-8, 4-0 Horizon League) started the match winning the closely contested doubles point. The Flames’ Bastian Harbo and Adriano Liccardo defeated Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) 8-2 at number one doubles. Valpo responded at the third spot as Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis,) and Stump won in a tie-break 9-8 (5) against Sean Kreymborg and Dan Wilson. UIC won the decisive second doubles contest as Eric Fey and Sebastian Lystad topped Alex Lau (Bloomington, Ind./Jefferson Senior H.S.) and Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) 9-7. Lystad added a 6-4, 6-1 victory at second singles against Shideler while Fey made it 3-0 UIC with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Litscher at the fourth spot. Harbo secured the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at third singles against Wagner while Liccardo topped Lau 6-3, 6-3 at the top of the order. Wilson defeated Brunette 6-4, 6-4 at number five singles before Stump earned the win for the Crusaders 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 against Kreymborg at sixth singles. “I think we played well today overall,” said head coach Jim Daugherty. “We just could not convert the big points-game points and break points. We need to be able to finish off games.” Valparaiso (4-11, 1-4) will return to home action on Saturday morning as the Crusaders host Cleveland State at the Valpo Tennis Complex. First serve against the Vikings is set for 10 a.m. |
