Monday, January 14, 2008
Saturday’s Valparaiso women’s basketball game has been selected as part of the NCAA’s “Pack the House Challenge”, an ongoing nationwide women's basketball attendance competition taking place throughout the season.
Valpo is trying to draw more than 1,472 fans to the contest against Green Bay for the 1:35 p.m. contest. The Phoenix are the nine-time defending Horizon League champions and are making their first appearance at the Athletics-Recreation Center since 1999.
Tickets for the game are just $3, with children 10 and under being admitted free of charge. The Valpo players will be signing autographs following the game, and giveaways will be thrown out to the crowd throughout the game as well.
Nearly 80% of the nation's Division I women's basketball programs signed up to participate in the competition, including Horizon League schools Butler, Cleveland State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, UIC, and Youngstown State. The premise for each participating institution - select a game/date at which an attempt is made to break your single-game all-time or 2006-07 season record. Based on the final results nationwide, 32 conference champions and one overall national champion will be determined by the NCAA. Valpo has chosen to try and top last year’s attendance figure from the Notre Dame contest.
In addition, the game has been designated by the Horizon League as their fourth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration game. Northview Elementary School students will be participating in special pre-game and halftime ceremonies to honor the event.
