Butler Tops Valpo in Horizon League Quarterfinals
Friday, April 24, 2009
Butler won the first two doubles matches and posted wins in three singles contests on Friday afternoon as the third-seeded Bulldogs defeated Valparaiso 4-0 in the Horizon League quarterfinals held in Indianapolis, Ind.
“Unfortunately the score is deceiving as it doesn’t show how well we played in the other matches that didn’t get completed,” Valpo head coach Jim Daugherty said. “I’m really proud of how hard the team fought.”
Butler (11-12) posted wins and second and third doubles to offset Valpo’s lead at the top of the lineup. Ben Raynauld and Lenz Theodor defeated Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-4 at number two doubles while Brandon Bayliss and Chris Herron topped Phidias Fortune (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) by the same score at the third spot. The Crusaders’ Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) and Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) led Bryce Warren and Zach Ervin 6-4 when the point was decided.
The Bulldogs added wins at second, fourth, and fifth singles to secure the victory. Warren defeated Litscher 6-2, 6-1 at the second spot while Bayliss downed DeHerrera 6-4, 6-3 at number four. Ervin was a 6-3, 6-2 winner against Stump at fifth singles. Valpo’s Whitmer led Herron 6-3, 5-5 at third singles when the match was stopped. Raynauld led Lau 6-2, 2-3 at the top while Theodor was ahead 6-3, 2-2 at the sixth spot.
Valparaiso (6-12), the tournament’s sixth seed, will return to action on Saturday afternoon in the consolation draw to face Detroit, the seventh seed at 3:30 p.m.
