Valparaiso men’s soccer head coach Mike Avery announced today his side’s schedule for the 2012 campaign, a slate which includes four games against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, three of which will take place at Brown Field. The Crusaders are coming off a 2011 season in which they captured the Horizon League regular season championship.

The Valparaiso men’s soccer team gathered in front of a group of over 100 family members and friends last weekend at the Harre Union for its annual end-of-season awards ceremony, celebrating a 2011 campaign which saw the Crusaders capture their first Horizon League regular season championship.

The Valparaiso men’s soccer team hosted its second annual head-shaving fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on Friday, benefiting funding to find cures for childhood cancers. Over 60 volunteers had their heads shaved on Friday as the donations soared past multiple goals set by the Crusaders, already totaling over $18,000.

The Valparaiso men’s soccer team will be getting their heads shaved for the second consecutive year and will be joined by, among others, Valparaiso University president Dr. Mark Heckler in the Harre Union on Friday, March 30 at 11 a.m. as the Crusaders raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

In a group that features one high-profile transfer, and four talented incoming freshmen, Valparaiso head coach Mike Avery announced today that five more players have committed to the men’s soccer program for the 2012 season. The five newest additions are transfer Jesse Ortiz (Aurora, Ill./Benedictine University) and incoming freshmen Ty Unger (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek), Nicholas Kane (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield), Alex Lindsey (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), and Bernard Tume (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral).

Center back Stefan Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) became the first player in Valparaiso men’s soccer history to be drafted into Major League Soccer on Tuesday, as he was selected with the fifth pick of the third round of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by Sporting Kansas City.

Valparaiso junior goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West) has been named a Third Team Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for his performance in 2011, both on the field and in the classroom. Zobeck was one of just 35 Division I student-athletes to earn a spot on the NSCAA Scholar All-American squads.

Despite its school-record 11th shutout of the season, Valparaiso couldn’t find a goal of its own in the second semifinal of the 2011 Horizon League Championship Friday evening at Brown Field as the game went through two overtimes at 0-0, and sixth-seeded Loyola eventually won a seven-round shootout by a 5-4 score to advance to Sunday’s championship match.

Eight Crusaders in all were honored on Monday afternoon as the Horizon League released its 2011 men’s soccer postseason award winners. Fifth-year senior Stefan Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson [College of Lake County/Marquette]) was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, while redshirt junior Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West) was honored as Goalkeeper of the Year and joined Antonijevic as a First Team All-League selection. Meanwhile, Mike Avery received Coach of the Year accolades.

90 minutes of soccer wasn’t enough to determine a winner Saturday, but extra time would go against the Crusaders, as Valparaiso fell in the regular season finale at Green Bay, 1-0, on an own goal in the 94th minute. The loss was Valpo’s only defeat in Horizon League play this year.

The Valparaiso men’s soccer team secured the outright Horizon League regular season championship Wednesday evening as the Crusaders played to a 1-1 draw with visiting Butler at Brown Field. With the title, Valpo’s first in any team sport since joining the Horizon League, the Crusaders will host the Horizon League Championship semifinals on Nov. 11 and final on Nov. 13 at Brown Field.

The Crusaders open the week at Brown Field Wednesday night against Butler, which will serve as Valpo’s Senior Night as well as the program’s annual TOCO benefit game. But more importantly, it guaranteed the Crusaders at least a share of the league regular season title, Valpo's first league crown in any sport since joining the Horizon League.
