The ValparaiZone upped its intensity this past weekend and was a vital force in creating the explosive atmosphere that helped the Crusader men's basketball team's victorious efforts against Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Packed with students, the ValparaiZone's wild antics clearly disrupted the YSU and CSU's offensive flow as their frustration was evident. The ValparaiZone was so boisterous in fact that the opponent's coaching staff continually complained about them to the refs, trying to persuade the officials to calm them down. As Valpo defeated two of the league's best, the Crusaders moved into second place in the Horizon League.

Kevin Van Wijk led the way for the Crusaders, scoring 23 points for each of the games. Van Wijk was dominant in the post, having his way against the interior defenders of the Penguins and Vikings. Moreover, his 10 of 13 effort on Sunday not only contributed to the Crusaders' 60% shooting, but also illustrated why he is one of the most efficient scorers in all of the country, ranked in the top 10 in the nation in field-goal percentage. Van Wijk also displayed his defensive prowess with 3 blocks on Sunday.

Ryan Broekhoff also had a great weekend posting 14 points and 8 rebounds Friday while scoring 14 points and 6 assists on Sunday.

Jay Harris scored 12 points and posted 4 assists while looking impressive off the bench against Cleveland State.

The Crusaders will return to the ARC on February 2 against Detroit.
