Valparaiso University’s baseball program had three players voted to the Horizon League’s All-Academic Team for their efforts both on the diamond and in the classroom. Andrew Bain (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor H.S.), Tyler Deetjen (Saint Charles, Ill./East H.S.), and Will Hagel (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.) were all selected for the 12-member team.

The 2012 Horizon League regular season and tournament champions are not resting on their laurels this summer as several Crusader baseball players are sharpening their skills for the upcoming 2013 season by playing in collegiate summer leagues throughout the country. The Crusaders are be represented on 14 different teams in nine leagues from the east coast to the west coast.

Valparaiso scored first and last on Friday evening into Saturday morning, but Purdue scored seven times in between as the 15th-ranked Boilermakers defeated the Crusaders 7-2 at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. in the opening game of the NCAA Regionals in front of 5,047 fans.

Valparaiso University arrived at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. for its first look at the stadium for the season and take part in a final practice before opening NCAA Tournament play on Friday evening against #15/15 Purdue. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, the practice was cut short about 20 minutes in as the light rain that had fallen throughout became heavier and the tarp was put on the field.

Valparaiso makes its first appearance in the NCAA Division I regionals since 1968 this weekend as the Crusaders head 27 miles down the road to U.S. Steel Yard in Gary for the double elimination tournament. The Crusaders will face #15 Purdue on Friday night at 7 p.m. before facing either #11 Kentucky or Kent State on Saturday.

It has been 44 years since Valparaiso has been to a NCAA Division I (then University Division) Baseball Tournament, waiting one more day did little to damper the enthusiasm of the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. After falling to UIC on Saturday, setting up the “if necessary” game, the Crusaders exploded with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Flames 14-5 at Les Miller Field to capture the Horizon League Baseball Tournament title and with it the automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.
