Tuesday, October 23, 2012
The Valparaiso women’s golf team finished out its 2012 fall campaign in style on Tuesday, as the team broke single-round and 36-hole tournament records en route to a second-place finish, while junior Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) broke her own individual single-round and tournament records while finishing atop the individual standings for the second time this fall.
Valpo bested its program single-round record, set just 24 hours earlier, by six strokes on Tuesday, posting a round of 293. Its 592 total for the 36-hole tournament smashed the previous program record for a tournament by 27 shots as well. The Crusaders trailed just Detroit in the team standings, finishing just four strokes behind the Titans.
After shooting an even-par 71 on Monday, Voigt improved by three strokes on Tuesday, posting a score of 68 to finish the tournament with a three-under-par total of 139, winning the tournament by two shots. Tuesday’s round broke Voigt’s own program single-round record by one shot, while her tournament total was five shots clear of her own previous tournament record, both set earlier this fall at Chicago State.
Junior Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) joined Voigt in the top-five of the individual standings, following Monday’s round of 70 with a 74 on Tuesday to finish at 144, matching the second-best 36-hole tournament total in program history. Junior Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) improved by four strokes on Tuesday, shooting a final-round 75 to close the tournament at 154, good for a tie for 22nd place.
Freshman Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) shot an 80 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 39th position at 159. Sophomore A.J. Selig (Hortonville, Wis./Appleton West) rounded out the Crusader lineup with a total of 162 following a round of 76 to close the tournament in a tie for 53rd place.
