#15 Valparaiso struggled on the first day of the Holiday Collegiate Classic in Bessemer, Ala., hosted by Alabama A&M, going just 1-4 on the first day of competition.

Valpo captured a victory against Texas Southern, outscoring TSU over the first two games by 110 pins en route to a 759-666 win in the four-game baker format. The Crusaders fell on Friday to #RV Alabama State (669-620), #8 Sam Houston State (770-678), Jackson State (732-719) and Tulane (697-676).

Valparaiso (44-49) returns to action on the second day of the three-day tournament on Saturday morning.
