Sunday, April 07, 2013
The Valparaiso men’s golf team posted a team score of three-over par 291 in the final round to hold off host Bradley and win the Bradley Invitational at WeaverRidge GC in Peoria, Ill. on Sunday.
The Crusaders finished with a three-round total of 894 to best the Braves by two strokes and claim their second tournament title of the 2012-13 season.
Valparaiso’s gold squad finished in fifth place.
“To close the tournament with a three-over par effort, was tremendous,” said Crusader coach David Gring. “I’m really proud of the guys. This is a great way to start the spring season.”
Senior Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence) matched the low round of the day with a four-under 68 to finish tied for first individually (221) with Bradley’s Andrew Weisenborn. Weisenborn made a birdie on the second playoff hole to claim medalist honors.
Senior Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) closed with an even-par final round of 72 to finish in a tie for third with a three-round total of 222.
Junior Kyle Henning (Brookfield, Wis./East) shot the third-lowest round of the day, a three-under 69, to finish in a tie for sixth at 223.
Sophomore Eric Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward) closed with a final round 74 to finish in eighth at 224.
The Crusaders placed five golfers in the top 11 spots. Sophomore Joe Harris (Washington, Iowa/Washington) finished 11th with a three-round total of 226.
“The guys played really steady,” Gring said. “They hit a lot of fairways and greens in regulation, and we had consistent ball striking. We want to concentrate on finishing the tournament. We talked about finishing strong and the guys did that today.”
Valparaiso returns to action on Friday, April 12 for day one action of the Detroit Titans Invitational in Highland, Mich.
