The votes are in and Valparaiso University’s student section, the Valparaizone, has advanced to the semifinal round of the second annual Naismith Student Section of the Year Award contest. As one of the top college basketball student sections in the country, Valpo is asking for fan support to help win the prestigious title. Crusader fans will now have a say in determining the most deserving student section by voting for the Naismith Student Section of the Year Award.

Valparaiso’s student section, the ValparaiZone, has been nominated as one of the top college basketball student sections in the country and is asking for fan support to help win the title. Crusader fans will have a say by voting for the Naismith Student Section of the Year Award. The winning student section gets bragging rights, while the winning school will receive $10,000 to be used in its general scholarship fund.

The Valparaiso women’s basketball team started the second half on a run to claim the lead Tuesday evening in Macomb, Ill., but Western Illinois would eventually re-claim the lead for good as the Crusaders fell by a final score of 69-55 to close out a four-game road trip.

Valparaiso volleyball head coach Carin Avery announced today that five high school seniors have signed with the Crusaders during the early signing period. Rachel Bruinsma, Emily Campbell, Tarrah Lasky, Jamie Lacheta and Morganne Longoria will all join the Valpo program as freshmen for the 2013 season.

Valparaiso senior Ryan Broekhoff (Frankston, Victoria, Australia/Australian Institute of Sport) scored 26 of his career-high 30 points in the first half as the Crusaders ran out to a 20-3 lead en route to a 77-64 victory Saturday night at the ARC over Bethune-Cookman. With the win, the Crusaders claimed the trophy for winning the Valparaiso Division of the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic.

Valparaiso men's basketball head coach Bryce Drew announced today that Alec Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington) signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period and will be joining the Crusader program as a freshman for the 2013-2014 season. Peters joins the four signees announced last week - Jubril Adekoya, Nick Davidson, Lexus Williams and Clay Yeo.
