The Crusader men's tennis team won their final non-conference match of the season Tuesday, blanking Chicago State at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Illinois.

As part of Valparaiso University’s “Proud to Be Valpo” Day of Giving last week, the athletics department held the first-ever Athletics Alumni Challenge, and the response was tremendous, as 325 former Valpo student-athletes donated upwards of $41,000 to the athletics department. The football and men’s tennis programs each won a $5,000 challenge grant, boasting the greatest number of alumni to make a gift and the highest percentage of alumni to make a gift, respectively.

The Valparaiso men's soccer program's annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser reached new heights this year, raising nearly $45,000 to fund research for cures for childhood cancers. 80 heads were shaved in a 30-minute span, with over 100 heads shaved in total. Check out the video for a taste of the event.

A forecast calling for cold temperatures and precipitation has prompted Tuesday's non-conference game at Toledo to be cancelled. The contest will not be made up. Valpo will return to the diamond Thursday to kick off a three-game set in Milwaukee. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm CT.

The Valparaiso women’s tennis team played its last nonleague match of the season on Monday afternoon, falling to Chicago State 7-0 at the HF Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill. The No.3 doubles pairing of Megan Barthels and Paige Heuer won the lone contest of the match for the Crusaders.

Freshman Charlie Emhardt recorded singles wins at No. 4 and 5 this week in addition to winning his 15th and 16th consecutive doubles matches alongside teammate Jeffrey Schorsch. Emhardt is 21-4 in singles play and 23-5 in doubles action this season. The honor is Emhardt's second of the year.

Dalton Lundeen collected his third Horizon League Pitcher of the Week Award of the season Monday. Lundeen struck out a career-high nine batters and didn't allow an earned run over eight innings Saturday versus Youngstown State. OF Mark Johnson batted .643 for the week, including two home runs, a triple, a double, and four RBIs in Saturday's doubleheader with the Penguins.

In a game full of many twists and turns, it was Valparaiso’s Kaitlyn Ranieri (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) who delivered the final blow, driving a double to the left-center gap to score Taylor Lawson (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) as the Crusaders walked off with the 7-6 win in eight innings over Cleveland State. Valpo ends the weekend at 7-3 in Horizon League play and atop the league standings.

Senior Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) finished in third place individually to lead the Valparaiso women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Crusader/Jaguar Challenge on Sunday, contested at The Course at Aberdeen. Valpo also fielded a 'B' squad, which placed fifth. The tournament served as the Crusaders' final tuneup for the 2014 Horizon League Championship.

Valpo battled the 12th-ranked Fighting Irish at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Indiana before falling 6-1. Charlie Emhardt claimed the lone point for the Brown and Gold at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-5, over ND's Alex Lawson.

The Crusader women were unable to right the ship on Sunday afternoon, falling to Oakland 6-1 in an important Horizon League match. Freshman Paige Heuer won Valparaiso its only point of the day with a win in No.3 singles. Heuer leads the team in singles victories with six on the season.

During a windy second day at the Chicagoland Championships, Elizabeth Bloy ran for a first place finish in the 1,500-meter run, and Sarah Peters vaulted for first place in the pole vault, as the Crusaders finished in sixth-place with 60.50 total points.

For the first time since September of 2011, the Valparaiso women’s golf team hosted intercollegiate action at The Course at Aberdeen in Valpo, as the opening round of the Crusader/Jaguar Challenge took place on Saturday afternoon. Fielding two teams in the field, the Crusaders sit in third and fourth place after the opening 18 holes.

Crusaders romp Penguins 13-1 in game one of the doubleheader; Youngstown State turns the tide in game two with a 12-4 defeat of Valpo to salvage a tilt in the three-game set. Dalton Lundeen was dazzling on the hill as he didn't allow an earned run over eight innings. Mark Johnson had a career day at the plate with two home runs. Karch Kowalczyk drove in a career-high six runs in the first contest.

The Valparaiso softball team bounced back from a loss in Saturday’s opener against Cleveland State in a Horizon League doubleheader, overcoming a three-run deficit in the nightcap for a 6-4 win to pull out a spit of the twinbill. The Vikings hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to send the Crusaders to a 3-2 loss. First pitch of Sunday's series finale has been moved up to 11 a.m.

With inclement weather expected on Sunday, the Valparaiso Crusaders and Youngstown State Penguins have agreed to play a doubleheader today (Saturday). The first game will start at the originally scheduled 12:00 pm CT time, with game two beginning a half hour after the conclusion of game one. No changes have been made to the probable starting pitchers.

Jazmin Taylor led the Crusader women on the first day of the Chicagoland Championships at Lewis University. Taylor set a new program record in the high jump, clearing a height of 5’5”, breaking her own school-record of 5’4 ¼”. Taylor’s record-breaking height was good for first in the event.

The Crusader men’s track and field team finished the first day of the Chicagoland Championships in fifth-place with 20 points scored in eight events. Kevin Adamik and Jacob Smutz each posted top-three finishes for Valparaiso, taking second and third in their respective events.

An entertaining afternoon at the Valparaiso University Softball Field was capped in the most entertaining way possible for Crusader fans, as sophomore Janelle Bouchard (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap, giving Valparaiso a 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois and a sweep of the doubleheader. Valpo rallied from a four-run deficit for an 8-6 win in the opener.

Due to a rain-filled weather forecast for Friday, the two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. The second game of the twin bill will start approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one.

Coach Avery welcomes eight new additions to his current squad. The 2014 class is compiled of student-athletes from four states and three different countries and is well balanced with two defenders, three midfielders and three forwards.

Despite drawing eleven walks, Valpo baseball dropped its sixth straight tilt Wednesday 10-6 to Northern Illinois. Michael Morman went 2-for-3, walked twice, scored three times and swiped three bases as the redshirt sophomore raised his average to .289. The Crusaders will host Wright State in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

Big innings proved instrumental in both games as the Valparaiso softball team split a home doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Eastern Michigan. The Crusaders scored 11 runs over the final two innings to earn a 13-3 victory in six frames in the opener, but the Eagles combined for nine runs in the first and last innings of an 11-7 decision in the nightcap.

Valparaiso volleyball head coach Carin Avery and the Crusader volleyball program will host its annual summer camp from July 8-11, 2014 at the Athletics-Recreation Center on the Valpo campus. The camp is open to both girls and boys, entering grades 3-12. The Crusaders will also be hosting another camp as part of a combination Soccer/Volleyball camp from August 4-6, 2014 for youths entering grades K-8.
