Crusaders Close Out John Dallio Memorial Sunday
Sunday, September 29, 2013
Junior Joe Harris (Washington, Iowa/Washington) earned his second career top-five finish to pace the Valparaiso men's golf team as it closed out the John Dallio Memorial, contested at Ruffled Feathers G.C. in Lemont, Ill., on Sunday.
The Crusaders finished in ninth place in the 11-team field, closing out the tournament with a score of 927 after a final-round 311. Valpo was just six strokes outside of a fifth-place finish. IUPUI claimed the team title with a score of 896.
“While we have had a lot of solid scoring this fall season, we had our struggles on the course this weekend,” said Crusader head coach David Gring. “Our guys put in the effort, but the results simply were not there.”
Harris shot a 78 in Sunday's final round to post a 54-hole score of 224 (+8), good for a tie for fourth place and just one shot behind a third-place finish. For Harris, it was his best career finish and the second top-five of his career, joining a fifth-place showing at Purdue last season.
“Besides a couple tough holes today, Joe had another excellent tournament,” said Gring. “He continues to play well for us this fall.”
Senior Kyle Henning (Brookfield, Wis./East) recorded a second straight round of 75 to finish in a tie for 15th place at 228, the second-best Crusader score. Freshman Peter Webb (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) posted a 78 on Sunday to close out the tournament with a score of 237, good for a tie for 37th place.
Junior Eric Winters (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) finished in a tie for 47th at 243, while freshman Nick Seitz (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) registered a score of 254 to finish tied for 59th. Playing as an individual, redshirt sophomore Jared Magoline (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac [Marquette]) shot a 78 on Sunday and completed the tournament tied for 43rd position at 240.
Valparaiso returns to the links in two weeks at the Dayton Fall Invitational.
“We will have a couple of weeks to prepare for the Dayton Invitational, and look forward to some quality practice time,” said Gring.
