Six Valpo Student-Athletes Receive Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award
Vashil Fernandez was one of six Crusaders recognized.

Six Valparaiso University student-athletes received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards as selected by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.  The award recognizes minority undergraduate students who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.

To be eligible for the honor, students have to be an intercollegiate athlete, maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average, and be active on their campus and in the community.

Earning the Arthur Ashe Jr. Awards were baseball’s Bryce Hara (Irvine, Calif./Northwood [Irvine Valley College]), men’s basketball’s Vashil Fernandez (Kingston, Jamaica/Princeton Day [Md.] Academy), bowling’s Alyssa Alvarez (Antioch, Ill./Antioch), football’s Ryan Singh (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), women’s golf’s Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and men’s tennis’ Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford).
