Strong Pitching, Hitting Propel Valpo To Sweep of IUPUI
Saturday, April 30, 2005
Chris Halstead tossed her second shutout in as many days and Brittany Atteberry pitched 6 shutout innings in the nightcap as Valpo swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from IUPUI by scores of 2-0 and 7-1. Megan Carroll, who broke Valpo's single-season doubles record with 12, went 5-for-7 with a home run, two doubles and two RBIs. Taylor Callahan was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

The Crusaders (11-38-1 overall), who improved their Mid-Con record to 10-11 and reside in the fifth place, must wait for the results of next weekend's conference games in order to learn their fate for the four-team Mid-Con Tournament. IUPUI (18-21, 8-8 Mid-Con) hosts UMKC for doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

Halstead, (6-17) scattered six hits, while fanning two and walking one. The freshman righthander matched Friday's performance when she tossed a five-hitter for her first career shutout (1-0). Carroll, who had three hits in the opener, gave Halstead the only run she needed by belting a two-out third-inning home run over the right center field fence.

Beth Adamski and Callahan combined for an insurance run in the fourth as Adamski led off with a double to right center and scored on Callahan's sharp single to center.
Halstead escaped jams in the sixth and seventh frames. In the sixth, she stranded Sarah Needy at third by retiring the last two Jaguars on consecutive groundouts. With two outs in the seventh and runners on first and second, Valpo catcher Shannon Robinson ended the game by picking off Susan Jones at second base.

Devan Craig (8-12) suffered the loss, allowing six hits in 6 innings. The righthander struck out one and did not yield a walk.

In the nightcap, Valpo's bats exploded for 11 hits, including four doubles and a triple. A five-run fourth broke a 2-0 game wide open as the Crusaders plated three runs on four hits before making an out. Ann Sievert led off with a double and scored on Kelly Silvey's two-bagger to left center. With Silvey on third, Alicia Ashburn successfully placed a sacrifice bunt, scoring the senior leftfielder. Following Mallory Gill's single, Carroll ripped her Valpo single-season record 12th double to left center, bringing Ashburn home for a 5-0 lead. With one out, Robinson drew a walk before Callahan delivered an RBI single to center. Carroll also scored on the throw as Valpo extended its advantage to 7-0.

In the previous inning, Robinson's RBI triple scored Carroll, who had doubled. Robinson then touched home on Callahan's RBI single.
Atteberry (5-11) kept the IUPUI offense at bay, resisting serious Jaguar threats in the first, second and third frames. The senior righthander got stronger as the game grew older, retiring seven of the last eight batters. Atteberry limited the Jaguars to six hits, while striking out one and walking three. Kayla Grutz pitched the final inning for Valpo, allowing one run on Stacey Speshyock's RBI double with two outs.

Seniors Silvey, Atteberry and Amy Mitchell were recognized between games in their final home date. Valpo will travel to Wisconsin on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
