Trio of Crusaders Earn Academic All-League Honors

Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran North), Tracy Korth (Elgin, Ill./Larkin [Elgin C.C.]) and Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) have all been named to the 12-person Academic All-Horizon League softball team.

Korb hit .255 on the 2008 campaign for the Crusaders with 20 runs scored while setting new Valpo single-season (29) and career (65) records for stolen bases.  She finished 15th in the nation with 0.62 stolen bases/game, helping the Crusaders to lead the nation in the category as a team.

In the classroom, Korb carries a 3.94 cumulative grade point average as a finance and marketing major.  A two-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete, she was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V First Team this season.

Korth earned First Team All-Horizon League honors as a senior after enjoying a stellar league campaign.  The outfielder paced the Crusaders with a .327 batting average while starting all 17 league games in left field.  She also posted nine extra-base hits in league play and closed the league schedule with a team-best .592 slugging percentage.

In the classroom, Korth holds a 3.53 cumulative GPA as a sports management major.  An NFCA Scholar-Athlete, she was honored on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll during both the fall and spring semesters this past year.

One of the most distinguished pitchers in school history, Zappia broke Crusader single-season records for victories (19) and strikeouts (176) and career marks for strikeouts (445) and appearances (139) in 2008.  A First Team All-Horizon League honoree and two-time league Pitcher of the Week, Zappia closed out her senior year with a 19-9 record and a 2.03 ERA.

In the classroom, Zappia carries a 3.78 cumulative GPA as a history major.  The U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March, Zappia was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V First Team this season.
