Crusaders Split Doubleheader With Centenary
Saturday, April 28, 2007
Taylor Callahan's (Pendergrass, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) 14th double of the season set a new school record and led off a four-run eighth inning in the series finale against Centenary in Shreveport, La. Saturday, as Valpo won the second game of the doubleheader, 5-1. The Ladies took Saturday's opener from Valpo by a 7-1 score.

The Crusaders and Ladies were knotted up at one after seven innings, forcing extra innings. Two batters after Callahan's record-breaking double, Shannon Robinson (Toronto, Ontario/John Redmond) beat out an infield single. After Whitney Warner (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) was intentionally walked, Beth Adamski (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) drilled a 2-RBI double into right field to plate Callahan and Robinson. Tracy Korth (Elgin, Ill./Larkin [Elgin C.C.]) followed with a 2-RBI single to account for the final tallies.

Valpo got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Ashley Wolter (Denver, Iowa/Denver) led off the frame with a double, and was sacrificed over to third by Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran North). Two batters later, Megan Carroll (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) recorded an RBI groundout to bring home Wolter with the first run of the game.

Centenary received a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third from Lindsey Virdell to tie the game at one, but that would be the only blemish given up by Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central). The junior threw all eight innings, giving up just four hits and the one run while striking out six batters to improve to 7-7 on the season. Kelsey Greeson gave up four runs in three innings of work for the Ladies, falling to 8-11.

In the opener, the Ladies put six runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning, getting 2-RBI singles from Haley Bassett and Micah Rhodes. Valpo managed to push a run across on an RBI single by Callahan in the fifth inning, but could get no closer. Chris Halstead (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) took the loss for the Crusaders, falling to 9-2 on the season, while Ryan Thacker improved to 7-6 with the win for Centenary (22-25, 6-6 Mid-Con).

Seven of Valpo's 16 hits on the day were doubles, breaking the team single-season record for two-base hits, as the Crusaders now have 57 doubles on the season. Callahan extended her team-best hitting streak to 14 games with her double in the nightcap, one of three hits for her on the day. Wolter also recorded three hits for Valpo, while also scoring two runs.

Valparaiso (25-13, 7-5 Mid-Con) is now just two wins shy of the program single-season record for wins in a season. The Crusaders will aim to move closer to the record when they travel to East Lansing, Mich. on Thursday to take on Michigan State. First pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. CDT.
