Valparaiso senior outfielder Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) earned one last accolade for her stellar career both on the field and in the classroom on Wednesday, as she was selected as an ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-American as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Korb was eligible for the Academic All-American selection after earning a spot on the First Team Academic All-District V squad earlier this month.  The Academic All-District honor was the third-such honor of her career.

Korb closed out her career on the field as Valpo’s career record holder in runs scored (104), stolen bases (100) and sacrifice bunts (52), and finished fourth in Crusader history with 152 career hits.  This past season, the Second Team All-Horizon League selection hit .331 out of the leadoff spot for Valpo, setting a new single-season school record with 35 stolen bases and is among the top-ten in the nation in steals/game.  She also scored 44 runs on the season, second-most in a single campaign in program history.

In the classroom, Korb maintained a 3.94 GPA as a double major in finance and marketing as of the end of the fall 2008 semester.  Last month, she was named the recipient of Valpo’s Laurel Award, presented to the Crusader senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.  A four-time Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree and a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete, Korb earned Valpo Presidential academic honors each of her three seasons of eligibility and was a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll each of Valpo’s first three semesters in the league.

To be eligible for Academic All-District and Academic All-America accolades, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be either a starter or key reserve.  The Academic All-America squads are culled from those athletes who are selected First Team Academic All-District.
