Pair of Beacons Named MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorees

The Valpo softball program had a pair of players recognized on Tuesday as the Missouri Valley Conference announced its softball Scholar-Athlete teams. Graduated seniors Peyton Moeder (Shawnee, Kan./Mill Valley) and Jaina Westphal (Waterford, Wis./Burlington) were both Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete selections.

Moeder earned Second Team All-MVC and All-Defensive Team accolades in her final season with the Beacons, hitting .290 with a team-best 26 runs scored, 10 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. She finished out her career at Valpo starting 145 consecutive games in center field, totaling 120 hits, 64 runs and 31 stolen bases — the latter ranking eighth all-time in Valpo history.

Moeder, who graduated on Sunday from Valpo with a degree in marketing, carried a 3.58 cumulative GPA into the spring semester. She earned Valpo Presidential Academic honors, the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence award and a place on the MVC Honor Roll over her four years.

Westphal was one of the MVC’s top dual threats at the plate, ranking eighth in the Valley with 16 steals while also leading Valpo in batting average (.319), on-base percentage (.358) and home runs (4). She tied Valpo’s single-game records for both home runs and stolen bases in a span of two weeks this season and ended her career by earning All-Tournament Team honors at the MVC Tournament after reaching base three times and driving in a pair of runs. Westphal accumulated 40 stolen bases over her four seasons, fourth-most in program history, and also tallied 98 hits and 57 runs scored.

Westphal, who graduated on Sunday from Valpo with a degree in business management, boasted a 3.628 cumulative GPA into the spring semester. She earned Valpo Presidential Academic honors, the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence award and a place on the MVC Honor Roll over her four years.
