The Valparaiso University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Georgetown Classic. The Crusaders dropped the morning match to the host Hoyas in five games, while rebounding to defeat Long Island in the evening three games to one.

Against the Hoyas, Valpo took the first game 30-26 before Georgetown evened the match before intermission winning game two 30-19. The Brown and Gold were 30-23 victors in the third game before the Hoyas forced a fifth and deciding game winning 30-18 in game four. Georgetown won game five 15-9.

Michelle Robinson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal H.S.) had her second straight 20 kill match, while adding 16 digs and hitting .280. Marion Hansen (Huntley, Ill./Huntley H.S.) added 19 kills and 11 digs while hitting a team-leading .405. Liz Mikos (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs H.S.) added five blocks for the Brown and Gold.

Lauren Warner led the hosts with 25 kills and a .340 hitting percentage, while adding 14 digs.

Georgetown (6-3) outhit Valpo .265-.198 for the match and held an 80-69 advantage in digs.

In the nightcap, Valpo downed the Blackbirds 30-26, 19-30, 30-21, 30-21 to finish in second place in the tournament.

Robinson and Elissa Malthaner (Brighton, Mich./Brighton H.S.) each led the way for the Brown and Gold with 13 kills. Robinson had a match-high 16 digs, while Malthaner hit .400.

Cyndi Norman (Minooka, Ill./Minooka H.S.) dished out 50 assists, while Malthaner and Sarah Schmalz (Corona, Calif./Riverside Christian H.S.) each had four blocks.

Cristina Pintilie led Long Island with 17 kills.

Valpo outhit the Blackbirds .246-.146 for the match.

Norman and Robinson were each named to the classic's all-tournament team.

Valpo will return to action on Monday evening when they travel to Baltimore to face UMBC in a 6 p.m. CDT match.
