Valpo Wins 23rd Straight against Chicago State

Valparaiso hit .361 for the match on its way to a three game victory over Chicago State on Saturday evening at the Athletics-Recreation Center on Homecoming weekend.

The Crusaders tallied their 12th straight conference win at home and their 23rd straight victory over the Cougars dating back to 1981 in the 30-28, 30-20, 30-28 win.

The opening game saw both teams hit extremely well, with Valpo hitting .400 with 17 kills and the Cougars putting down 15 kills at a .345 rate. Chicago State's hitting dropped off the remainder of the match, while Valpo hit .316 in game two and .375 in the final game.

Michelle Robinson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal H.S.) hit .500 with 16 kills to lead the Brown and Gold, while Marion Hansen (Huntley, Ill./Huntley H.S.) added nine kills and no errors to hit .692 and Sarah Schmalz (Corona, Calif./Riverside Christian H.S.) hit .600 with eight kills.

Sara Silcox (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) had a match-high ten digs, while Cyndi Norman (Minooka, Ill./Minooka H.S.) dished out 44 assists.

Jennifer Harris led Chicago State (4-16, 1-3 Mid-Con) with 13 kills, while Alison West added 11 of her own. Each hit .435 for the match. Lisa Votteler had a team-high nine digs for the Cougars.

Valpo (11-7, 3-2) outblocked Chicago State 8-5 for the match, but the Cougars hung tough with 11 service aces and took advantage of eight Crusader service errors.

Valparaiso will return to action on Tuesday evening when the Crusaders travel to Indianapolis to face Butler in a 7 p.m. match.
