Crusaders Remain Perfect after Downing ETSU

The Valparaiso volleyball team ran its record to 7-0 on the season Saturday afternoon, defeating East Tennessee State 30-14, 30-24, 30-19 in their second game of the Popcorn Classic at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Heather Hynds (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein H.S.) and Jessi Novak (Antigo, Wis./Antigo H.S.) led the Crusaders with 11 kills each, while freshman Jessie Fox (Granger, Ind./Penn H.S.) added seven kills while hitting .312. Hynds hit .318 for the match for the Brown and Gold.

Fox and Katie Bova (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels H.S.) each recorded a team-high nine digs in the match and Bova also dished out 22 assists.

Kate Steidle and Kelsey Sherich led the Buccaneers with six digs each, while Kristi Robinson tallied 12 digs and 15 assists.

Valpo had 42 kills for the match, while holding East Tennessee State (1-4) to just 25 kills and -.023 hitting for the contest.

In the morning's first match, Cleveland State won the first two games of the match only to see Indiana State rally and force a game five before defeating the Sycamores 30-25, 30-26, 28-30, 23-30, 15-11.

Jamie Bouyer led Cleveland State (5-1) with 22 kills, while Brittanie Stowell and Kristin Widmar each tallied 13 for Indiana State (3-2).

The Popcorn Classic will wrap-up later Saturday evening as East Tennessee State will face Cleveland State at 5 p.m., followed by Indiana State and the Crusaders at 7:30 p.m.
