Valpo Sweeps IUPUI in Mid-Con Finale
Saturday, November 11, 2006Senior middle blocker Jessie Fox (Granger, Ind./Penn) registered her 400th career block midway through game two, and Valparaiso used an emphatic .500 hitting percentage in game three to complete the sweep of IUPUI Saturday night in Indianapolis, 30-26, 30-23, 30-22.
Fox is just the fourth player in Valpo history to reach the 400-block plateau, and is only the second Crusader to have at least 1,000 kills and 400 blocks, joining former teammate Lauren Moulton. With her three blocks Saturday, Fox has registered 402 career blocks, just two behind Moulton for third all-time at Valpo. She also recorded 15 kills Saturday, moving her into eighth position on the all-time kills list with 1,036.
The win was the Crusaders' 20th victory of the season, the fifth straight year Valpo has accomplished the feat, marking the longest stretch in program history. It also is the sixth straight year that the Brown and Gold has captured at least nine Mid-Con matches.
Nicole Schulz (Kewaskum, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) paced the Valpo offense with 17 kills on .344 hitting. Schulz increased her season hitting percentage to .338 with Saturday's effort, on pace to break the Crusader single-season record by 27 points, and is now hitting .378 over her last ten matches.
Angie Porché (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) was the third Crusader with double-digit kills, hitting at a .400 clip and picking up 15 markers. Porché also added three service aces, as the Crusaders tallied 10 aces as a team.
Brittany Marks (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) continued her march towards Valpo's single-season digs record, leading the Crusaders with 18 Saturday night, giving her 578 on the year, just 24 behind Sara Silcox's record.
Valpo's offense was efficient as always Saturday night, hitting at a .294 clip while holding IUPUI (12-19, 7-5 Mid-Con) to a .143 hitting percentage. Carol Newell led the Jaguars with nine kills, while Devika Bellamy added 18 assists, nine digs, and seven kills.
Valparaiso (20-11, 9-3 Mid-Con) finishes tied for second in the Mid-Con standings in 2006, the sixth consecutive year the Crusaders have finished at least in a tie for second. Valpo will take on Western Illinois in the first round of the Mid-Con Championship on Friday, with seedings and times to be announced.
