Valparaiso freshman libero Taylor Root (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) has been named one of the Collegiate Volleyball Update’s (CVU.com) ‘Rising Stars’, honoring 19 freshmen nationwide who stood out with their performance in their rookie season.

Root receives the honor from the CVU after being named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year for 2009 while also earning a spot on the All-League squad.  Root led all league players with 5.05 digs/set, good for 29th nationally, and ranked second in league-only play with 5.31 digs/set.  The freshman, who was named to three All-Tournament teams over the course of the season and earned Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honors twice, finished her first year with 586 total digs, a Valpo freshman record and good for fifth in a single season in Crusader history.
